These are our favorite winter baits for fishing with maggots (or chopped worms). It really can't get any more subtle! The reason we choose foam is because it has no smell and no taste. We see in many underwater videos that carp in winter pick up your hookbait more out of curiosity than to actually eat. Due to the carp's receptors, which allow them to detect food stimuli, they often leave heavily flavored hookbaits untouched, especially on pressured waters. Carp don't have hands, so if they want to test something, they have to take it in their mouth, and then they're hooked!
Red, black, and pink are the 3 colors I always catch on. All underwater footage shows that warm colors are picked up fastest by carp and thus yield the most bites!
You can attach the maggots to the foam by tying a coarse fish hook to the hair rig. No need for knots, as burning a blob is enough. Or you can tie floss to the hair rig and thread the maggots onto it. Our maggot needle is useful for this because it has an open eye.
